Performance: Religious Life, Liturgy and Art

 

The Titus Brandsma Institute is the place where research is undertaken into the various sources which give form to the Christian spiritual tradition. This research is not only historical in nature but also seeks to contribute to new forms in which the inspiration from these ‘schools of spirituality’ (Carmelite, Vincentian, Ignatian, Benedictine etc.) is passed on. Attention is therefore given to the conditions under which, and the modes in which, religious life in our time continues. The dynamic of ‘contemplation’ and ‘action’ therefore forms the matrix which directs this research. Questions relating to the particular feature of religious life are also related to questions about the form and meaning of the liturgy. In the 20th and 21st century, the nature of the thinking and reflecting which circles around some of the questions concerning the ‘performativity’ of religious life, would appear to be turning back to art. Art in our time is an important site for spiritual processes. It is precisely this relationship which is considered in this area of research.
