The Titus Brandsma Institute (TBI) is a research centre for mysticism and spirituality. We study the foundations, history and themes of historical and contemporary forms of Judaic and Christian mysticism and spirituality. The study of the spiritual culture, past and present, and of the various ways in which people have given shape and meaning to their spiritual quest is central to the TBI.
Our institute focuses in particular on movements such as Modern Devotion and Spirituality in modern society. And also on mystical writers, for example Thomas à Kempis or Teresa of Ávila and mysticism experts like Michel de Certeau and Titus Brandsma.
We carry out scientific research and teach from a critical, scientific foundation.
The Titus Brandsma Institute focuses strongly, in addition to scientific research, on teaching and training for a widely interested audience. Education about themes such as the spiritual way, spiritual guidance and ‘unknowing’ as a guide offer a surprising perspective on and from the various Judaic and Christian spiritual traditions
The TBI also organises a number of interesting and accessible TBI lectures each year and there are reading groups around mystical authors such as Simone Weil. Once a year, you can immerse yourself in a single text by a mystic writer for a whole week, during the Mysticism Seminar. The text for 2019 will be the Geestelijk Hooglied (Spiritual Canticle) by John of the Cross.
We also provide our expertise in the areas of meaningfulness and spirituality to companies and organisations (Incompany training).
The Titus Brandsma Institute, founded in 1968 on the basis of a cooperation agreement between Radboud University and the Dutch Carmelite Province, has been highly regarded both nationally and internationally for more than 50 years. The TBI works closely with the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies and the Faculty of Arts. Currently the TBI is represented by twenty enthusiastic and passionate staff members.
Information about the range of activities which the Institute pursues is given in our Annual reports and our Scientific Plan (merely in Dutch).
