About us

The Titus Brandsma Institute was established in 1968 as a collaborative venture between Radboud University, Nijmegen and the Dutch Carmel Province, in memory of Professor Dr. Titus Brandsma (1881-1942) O.Carm. It is a scientific research institute which, consistent with the nature of spirituality, combines scientific and applied research. It therefore has a double purpose:

  • The academic study of the foundations, history and themes of historical and contemporary forms of spirituality, within the Judeo-Christian tradition, for the purpose of
  • applying the results and insights gained through scholarly research to areas such as spiritual accompaniment, actualised interpretations, lived spirituality and the provision of services with regard to social, ecclesiastical and religious organisations.

In order to ensure that the scientific research into spirituality (as championed by the Institute) is well served, the interaction between both parts of the purpose is considered to be of vital importance and the individuality of both is respected.

The Titus Brandsma Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. It is a para-university institute embedded in the structures of Radboud University which stands surety for the infra-structure of the Institute and the use of university facilities. Likewise, the Carmel Order stands surety for at least 3 members of staff. In addition, the Institute is dependent on sponsors, particularly on the part of Catholic organisations. With its eye directed to education and research in spirituality, the Institute has a collaborative working agreement with the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies of Radboud University.
